L'ouvrage est de niveau A (IUT - BTS - 1er cycle)
Facile à appréhender sans nombreux prérequis spécifiques l'ouvrage est une initiation à la description de l'état solide, passage obligé pour de nombreux étudiants scientifiques.
Le premier chapitre introduit les paramètres caractéristiques. Puis il les utilise pour construire une description structurale des solides. Il traite de la périodicité cristalline. Il présente également les techniques courantes de synthèse des solides et les lois fondamentales à la base de la détermination des structures.
Le deuxième chapitre insiste surtout sur la démarche qui conduit à l'édification de structures théoriques à partir du modèle des empilements compacts.
Le troisième chapitre compare ces structures théoriques à différents types de solides connus et montre que ce modèle des empilements compacts peut même être étendu à des structures plus complexes que les métaux (structures ioniques, moléculaires...).
L'ensemble est illustré par des exercices et problèmes corrigés. Enfin des annexes regroupent quelques rappels de géométrie et de thermo-dynamique.

L'ouvrage rassemble en partie I les bases de la cristallographie, en détaillant, d'une part la symétrie d'un point de vue macroscopique, et d'autre part la symétrie à l'échelle atomique. La partie II traite de la diffraction des rayons X et s'adresse essentiellement aux étudiants désireux de travailler dans le domaine de la cristallographie. La partie III concerne plus généralement les étudiants intéressés par la physique du solide, puisque y est exposée l'influence de la symétrie sur les propriétés physiques, en introduisant les tenseurs permettant de traduire mathématiquement cette influence. La partie IV s'adresse plus spécialement aux étudiants en chimie du solide et en sciences des matériaux.
