Ces réactions sont des équilibres plus ou moins déplacés, obéissant aux lois de la thermochimie. Leur compréhension fait appel aux raisonnements de la chimie analytique. Ce livre peut ainsi constituer une suite à l'ouvrage du même auteur Thermodynamique et cinétique chimique. Après un descriptif des solutions et une présentation de l'acidité, avec comme application les titrages acide/base, l'ouvrage développe la notion de complexe, c'est-à-dire la possibilité de masquer un élément par un ligand. Puis dans une partie dédiée aux équilibres de partage gaz/liquide, solide/liquide ou liquide/liquide, il relie les propriétés précédentes pour modifier ces équilibres. C'est le principe des procédés d'hydrométallurgie. Les chapitres suivants sont consacrés à l'oxydo-réduction, phénomène très important en chimie et biochimie. Dans les applications, sont notamment analysés les titrages redox, les batteries, l'électrosynthèse et la corrosion.
