Parmi les méthodes thermiques d'analyse, l'analyse calorimétrique différentielle (ACD), plus connue sous le nom de d.s.c. (differential scanning calorimetry), connaît un essor exceptionnel lié à plusieurs avantages : sa commodité de mise en oeuvre, la faible masse d'échantillon utilisée et le spectre très large des phénomènes enthalpiques qui peuvent être étudiés.
Pierre Claudy propose ici le seul ouvrage de synthèse en langue française consacré à l'ACD. Celle-ci y est présentée en s'appuyant d'une part, sur la thermodynamique et la cinétique, et d'autre part sur la modélisation électrique de la thermique. Les différents types de calorimètres isothermes et d'ACD sont décrits, et leur mode de fonctionnement explicité en utilisant des modèles.
En programmation linéaire de la température, les applications proches ou éloignées de l'équilibre thermodynamique sont passées en revue. La programmation non-linéaire (escaliers, rampes plus modulation périodique) est également abordée et illustrée de nombreux cas concrets. Après une étude des méthodes expérimentales et des méthodes et produits d'étalonnage, le vaste champ d'applications de l'ACD est exposé. Les méthodes de mesure de la pureté, de la porosité, de même que les dosages calorimétriques sont décrits par l'auteur dans un grand nombre de cas, tout comme la sécurité des produits chimiques.
Conçu dans un cadre théorique utilisant les équations de base accessibles au premier cycle, mais néanmoins tourné vers la pratique industrielle, l'ouvrage soutiendra les professionnels et intéressera un large public, depuis les étudiants des IUT, des écoles d'ingénieurs, de l'enseignement universitaire, jusqu'aux industriels en formation continue.Note de contenu :

Les prérequis se limitent à une bonne familiarité avec l'Analyse enseignée en deuxième année d'université. L'ouvrage est destiné aux étudiants de L3, M1- M2 et aux agrégatifs, qui pourront l'utiliser à divers niveaux. De nombreux exercices corrigés avec soin (environ cent cinquante) viennent compléter le cours proprement dit et faciliter la tâche de l'étudiant.
Par ailleurs, une bonne cinquantaine de figures aide grandement à la compréhension de l'ensemble.
Martine et Hervé Queffélec, pédagogues de grand renom, nous offrent ici un texte original, qui renouvelle l'enseignement d'un sujet classique, et qui vient s'ajouter aux meilleurs livres en le domaine. Le point de départ est la fonction exponentielle complexe, petit bijou mathématique s'il en est. Les auteurs revisitent aussitôt après les polynômes, qui sont la version pour enfants des fonctions holomorphes, et qui laissent apparaître beaucoup de phénomènes fondamentaux : analyticité, propriété de la moyenne, principe du maximum, etc.
L'approche adoptée devient dès lors claire, partir du plus simple pour arriver confortablement au plus profond. Les moments clés sont évidemment la formule de Cauchy et le théorème des résidus. Et, comme tout le monde le sait, une fois établie l'équivalence holomorphie-analyticité, les récompenses pleuvent !
