Le sol possédant une faible conductivité est un milieu où l'étude de la propagation des ondes électromagnétiques est d’un grand intérêt, en particulier pour des applications de type génie-civil. Les méthodes basées sur la propagation des ondes électromagnétiques sont susceptibles de répondre à un grand nombre de problèmes inhérents à ce domaine. Lorsque les antennes sont disposées à la surface du sol, on peut facilement prospecter de grandes superficies de terrain. Cependant, les phénomènes physiques mis en jeu imposent une limite en termes de résolution et de profondeurs d’investigation. Ainsi, des anomalies de petites dimensions, situées à de grandes profondeurs (supérieur à 10 m) ne peuvent être détectées. On préfère alors utiliser des forages de reconnaissance. En effet, après une définition plus précise des applications, une modélisation théorique est indispensable afin de permettre une meilleure interprétation des résultats et optimiser les paramètres d’étude.
