Cet ouvrage, principalement destiné aux étudiants des premiers cycles universitaires de physique et mathématique et aux élèves des classes préparatoires aux écoles d'ingénieurs, intéressera également les candidats aux CAPES et à l'Agrégation de physique, ainsi que les étudiants des écoles supérieures de physique et d'ingénierie.
Les auteurs ont réalisé un ouvrage très original, en particulier en donnant pour la première fois, dans un livre d'enseignement, une démonstration des formules fondamentales de la relativité restreinte sous une forme moderne basée sur les propriétés intrinsèques de l'espace et du temps, et des symétries déduites du principe de relativité. Ainsi les fondements de la relativité deviennent indépendants de la théorie électromagnétique, et plus particulièrement du postulat, devenu archaïque, d'Einstein de constance de la vitesse de la lumière. Il en résulte une bien meilleure compréhension pour le lecteur des bases de la théorie relativiste, et surtout de ses développements concernant le temps et l'espace qui heurtent tant l'intuition.
Le renouveau ainsi apporté à l'enseignement de la relativité par cet exposé devrait inciter nombre d'enseignants, de physiciens et de personnes intéressées par la théorie de la relativité, à lire cet ouvrage. De nombreux exemples de résultats expérimentaux permettent aux auteurs d'expliquer en détail les conséquences de la théorie relativiste dont les prévisions sont vérifiées chaque jour avec davantage de précision dans de très nombreux domaines.Note de contenu :
