Il est issu d'un cours de physique des plasmas dispensé ces dernières années devant différents auditoires : à l'université de Paris XI (L3, M1 et M2), à l'Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan (L3), à l'Ecole Polytechnique (M2), à l'Ecole Centrale (M1) et à l'Ecole Supérieure d'Electricité (L3). Il est d'usage de structurer la physique des plasmas en trois domaines et de distinguer respectivement : la physique des plasmas industriels (réacteurs pour les nanotechnologies et propulseurs spatiaux), la physique des plasmas naturels (environnement terrestre et astrophysique) et la physique des plasmas thermonucléaires (tokamak et interaction laser-plasma). Ces trois domaines possèdent en commun un ensemble d'outils, de méthodes et de résultats constituant la physique des plasmas. Ce cours, à vocation généraliste, est construit autour de cet ensemble de connaissances et résultats communs à ces trois domaines. Il peut être adopté comme manuel de base aux niveaux L3 et Ml ou comme monographie de référence pour les ingénieurs et chercheurs confrontés à des problèmes de physique des plasmas.Note de contenu :
