On sait, depuis l'avènement du laser, que l'intensité de la lumière, est susceptible de modifier les propriétés optiques des matériaux. Cette «optique non linéaire» autorise l'interaction entre faisceaux lumineux par l'intermédiaire des milieux qu'ils traversent.
Les matériaux pour l'optique non linéaire sont de natures très différentes. Les semi-conducteurs sont parmi les plus étudiés. Leurs propriétés sont différentes selon qu'ils sont sous forme massive, structurée ou nanocristallite. Les cristaux photoréfractifs inorganiques restent la référence pour les matériaux non linéaires fonctionnant à faible illumination. Les matériaux organiques (polymères, verres ou cristaux liquides) occupent cependant une place croissante en raison de leur faible coût potentiel et des possibilités d'ingénierie qu'ils offrent.
Le champ d'application potentiel de l'optique non linéaire est lui-même très vaste. Il va du mélange de fréquences et à ses applications dans les lasers et les oscillateurs optiques paramétriques, au traitement de l'information par manipulation de faisceaux et d'images, en passant par toutes les applications de l'interférométrie et de l'holographie dynamique. Elles concernent aussi bien la propagation guidée que la propagation libre et permettent d'imaginer l'opération tout optique de dispositifs, en particulier dans le domaine des télécommunications et du traitement du signal.
A travers neuf contributions allant du fondamental à l'appliqué, suivies de deux exposés de stagiaires, cet ouvrage aborde la diversité de ces aspects «matériaux» et «fonctions».Note de contenu :
