Carey et Richard J. Sundberg présentent à la communauté scientifique une étude approfondie et actualisée de la chimie organique, sous la forme d'un texte clair et bien structuré. Tout en restant fidèles au schéma organisationnel des éditions précédentes, les auteurs apportent des éléments nouveaux sur certains concepts devenus plus importants au cours des dernières années. Le tome 1 Structure moléculaire et mécanismes réactionnels, est un ouvrage fondamental qui permettra au lecteur de comprendre clairement les structures des composés organiques et les mécanismes des réactions organiques. Les sujets de l'aromaticité et des réactions des composés aromatiques font maintenant l'objet de deux chapitres distincts. Le chapitre sur les réactions des radicaux libres a été retravaillé pour mettre l'accent sur les aspects mécaniques et cinétiques caractéristiques. De nombreux problèmes ont été ajoutés et les énoncés ont été conçus pour couvrir les concepts présentés dans le texte ; comme dans les éditions précédentes, les références relatives aux problèmes sont regroupées à part à la fin du volume.
