Mais dans les autres installations où sont manipulées des matières fissiles - fabrication, transports, retraitement de combustibles nucléaires - il faut absolument éviter d'atteindre et surtout de dépasser l'état critique qui conduirait à un accident causant des dégâts matériels et émettant des rayonnements dangereux.
Ce livre développe ces notions de criticité, apporte les éléments de neutronique permettant d'évaluer le facteur de multiplication, analyse les scénarios accidentels susceptibles d'intervenir et présente les expérimentations et les codes de calcul associés.
Les spécialistes du nucléaire seront intéressés par une présentation originale de ce problème. Ce livre traite de la simulation des équations incompressibles de Navier-Stokes pour les écoulements laminaires et turbulents. Le livre se limite à expliquer et à utiliser la méthode des différences finies. Il fournit un grand nombre de codes sources permettant de jouer avec les équations de Navier-Stokes et de comprendre la physique complexe liée à la mécanique des fluides. Les simulations numériques sont des outils utiles pour comprendre la complexité des flux, ce qui est souvent difficile à déduire des expériences de laboratoire. Ce livre peut donc être très utile aux chercheurs qui effectuent des expériences en laboratoire, car ils n’ont souvent pas le temps supplémentaire d’étudier la grande variété de méthodes numériques; de plus, ils ne peuvent passer plus de temps à transférer l’une des méthodes dans un langage informatique. Au moyen de simulations numériques, par exemple, il est possible d'obtenir des informations sur le champ de tourbillon qui sont difficiles à obtenir par des mesures. Ce livre peut être utilisé par les étudiants diplômés ainsi que par les étudiants de premier cycle tout en lisant des ouvrages sur la mécanique des fluides théorique; il enseigne comment simuler la dynamique des champs de flux sur des ordinateurs personnels.
