Observer, analyser sans modifier le solide étudié mais aussi manipuler et organiser le solide constituent les atouts principaux de l'optique qui démontre ses potentialités jusqu'à l'échelle atomique. Depuis l'avènement des fibres optiques et des guides d'ondes dans les télécommunications, l'optique a eu un impact considérable dans la miniaturisation de composants de toute sorte. De la même manière que le guidage optique avait été expliqué depuis plusieurs siècles, Newton avait déjà pressenti les propriétés de l'optique à l'échelle nanométrique, propriétés qui ont été démontrées par le britannique Synge en 1928. L'avènement de la technique de sonde locale, d'effet Tunnel, avec le microscope à force atomique (AFM) a permis d'exploiter cette approche. Parallèlement l'ingénierie des faisceaux lumineux a démontré toutes ses potentialités pour atteindre des résolutions nanométriques et conduire à la manipulation d'objets biologiques et à la modélisation originale de nouveaux matériaux. C'est le domaine de la microscopie optique à laquelle une dimension de spectroscopie apporte des potentialités considérables pour l'étude des propriétés de la matière très finement divisée et de son organisation. Le contenu de cet ouvrage contribue à illustrer d'abord le développement des approches théoriques de la notion de champ proche, puis son application aux propriétés optiques de la matière nanostructurée.

A côté du monde des nanostructures pour l'électronique et de celui des objets moléculaires ou supramoléculaires uniques, existe une démarche visant à réaliser des matériaux dont les propriétés révèleraient à l'échelle macroscopique - celle des objets et des matériaux – les propriétés des états très divisés de la matière. Cette démarche repose sur des voies d'élaboration extrêmement variées : chimie sol-gel, mécanochimie, croissance en plasma, jets atomiques, autoassociation moléculaire... Son domaine d'application va des fluides adaptatifs et des formulations cosmétiques aux métaux ultradurs et aux céramiques superphistiques, en passant par le relargage de médicaments, les catalyseurs, les composants de l'optique non linéaire, les nanocomposites polymères et même les bétons a très, hautes performances.
Le fondement de cette démarche, qui marie les sciences de la matière mole et celles de la matière dure, est triple. Il s'agit, soit d'exacerber les influences multiples que les interfaces, internes ou externes, peuvent exercer sur les propriétés, soit de tirer profit du confinement, quantique ou classique, qu'impose la taille manométrique de chaque unité structurale, soit encore de réaliser des couplages au sein d'associations complexes, multifonctionnelles, que seule permet la petite taille de ces unités.
Ce livre est le rapport de synthèse des travaux du groupe « nanomatériaux » de l'observatoire français des techniques avancées. Il analyse les multiples pistes qu'offrent la maîtrise des très petites échelles microstructurales dans la conception des matériaux et la maîtrise des associations - spontanées ou forcées - réalisables a cette échelle. Il offre un état de l'art approfondi du domaine et décrit des perspectives, qui concernent autant les matériaux, de grande diffusion que les matériaux spécifiques.
