Ce livre est le premier ouvrage de référence sur les géosciences publié en couleurs et en français. Avec plus de 800 illustrations, il couvre en un seul volume l'intégralité des thématiques associées aux géosciences. Il présente ainsi une vision globale et cohérente du système Terre, depuis la formation de notre planète au sein de l'Univers et du système solaire, jusqu'à son état actuel.
Quatre grands thèmes sont successivement abordés : la formation de la planète Terre et sa minéralogie ; les marqueurs des mouvements terrestres (sismologie, géodynamique interne et externe) ; le cycle des roches et la formation des chaînes de montagnes (avec notamment un chapitre intégralement consacré aux Alpes et un chapitre traitant de la chaîne varisque européenne) ; les ressources de la Terre (combustibles fossiles, ressources minérales).
Les différents thèmes sont présentés grâce à des textes clairs et didactiques, appuyés de nombreux schémas, cartes et photographies. L'approche est résolument moderne : une très large place est accordée aux études de cas sur le terrain, et les formidables bouleversements qu'ont connus les géosciences ces dernières décennies permettent de présenter à la fois des modèles bien consolidés et des hypothèses ou théories encore en pleine effervescence.

L’ouvrage présente de façon claire et précise les mécanismes fondamentaux des réseaux de télécommunications.
Il analyse d’abord la fonction transmission en développant les principes fondamentaux (chapitre I), puis l’encodage des données (chapitre II), les liaisons de données (chapitre III) et le multiplexage (chapitre IV). Le chapitre V introduit les différents modes de transfert dans les réseaux : mode synchrone (circuit), asynchrone (paquet), acheminement, commutations, routage. communication standardisées (OSI, TCP/IP, RNIS large bande). Le chapitre VII décrit l’évolution du mode commuté: X25, Frame Relay, ATM, ainsi que Ethernet commuté. Cet ouvrage est un manuel de gravitation classique en deux parties : les systèmes contenant très peu de corps (typiquement 2 plus éventuellement des perturbations) et les systèmes en comportant beaucoup, suffisamment pour utiliser les techniques de la physique statistique. Une caractéristique intéressante de la théorie des cordes est qu'elle fournit une théorie de la gravité quantique. Gravity and Strings est un exposé pédagogique autonome de cette théorie, de ses fondements et de ses résultats fondamentaux. Dans la première partie, les fondations remontent aux premières théories de la gravité spécial-relativistes sur le terrain, montrant comment de telles théories, associées au concept du graviton, conduisent à la relativité générale. Les théories de la gravité sont ensuite discutées et utilisées pour introduire des théories de supergravité. La partie II couvre certaines des solutions les plus intéressantes de la relativité générale et de ses généralisations. Il s'agit notamment des trous noirs Schwarzschild et Reissner-Nordström, de la solution Taub-NUT, des instantons gravitationnels et des ondes gravitationnelles. Les théories de Kaluza-Klein et les utilisations des supersymétries résiduelles sont discutées en détail. La partie III présente la théorie des cordes du point de vue de l'action efficace, en utilisant les résultats trouvés plus tôt dans le livre comme arrière-plan. Les théories de la supergravité associées aux supercordes et à la théorie M sont soigneusement étudiées et utilisées pour décrire les dualitics et les solutions classiques liées aux états non-pertubatifs de ces théories. Un bref récit des calculs extrêmes de l'entropie des trous noirs est également donné.
