Ce manuel est conçu pour compléter des textes de physique de niveau supérieur en mécanique classique, électricité, magnétisme et mécanique quantique. Organisé autour du concept central d'espace vectoriel, le livre comprend de nombreuses applications physiques dans le corps du texte ainsi que de nombreux problèmes de nature physique. L’un des objectifs de ce livre est également de présenter au physicien le langage et le style des mathématiques, ainsi que le contenu de sujets particuliers ayant une pertinence contemporaine en physique.
Les chapitres 1 et 2 sont consacrés aux mathématiques de la physique classique. Les chapitres 3, 4 et 5 - la colonne vertébrale du livre - couvrent la théorie des espaces vectoriels. Le chapitre 6 couvre la théorie de la fonction analytique. Dans les chapitres 7, 8 et 9, les auteurs abordent plusieurs techniques importantes de la physique théorique - la méthode de Green pour résoudre des équations différentielles et partielles, et la théorie des équations intégrales. Le chapitre 10 introduit la théorie des groupes. Les auteurs ont inclus une large sélection de problèmes à la fin de chaque chapitre, certains illustrant ou développant des points mathématiques, d'autres insistant sur l'application physique des techniques développées dans le texte.
Essentiellement autonome, le livre suppose uniquement la préparation standard de premier cycle en physique et en mathématiques, à savoir la mécanique intermédiaire, l’électricité et le magnétisme, la mécanique quantique d’introduction, le calcul avancé et les équations différentielles. Le texte peut être facilement adapté pour un cours d'un semestre au niveau de la maîtrise ou du premier cycle.
