La science des sols intègre de plus en plus l'action des organismes vivants à son champ d'activité. Les rôles irremplaçables de la racine, des bactéries, des champignons et des animaux dans la formation, l'évolution et le fonctionnement des sols, sont de mieux en mieux connus. Tout en apportant les bases nécessaires de pédologie générale, cet ouvrage met l'accent sur la diversité des aspects biologiques du sol, à différents niveaux d'organisation des écosystèmes: molécules organiques, microorganismes, rhizosphère, populations et communautés microbiennes et animales, relations sol - végétation.
L'ouvrage est organisé en deux parties: la première, à la lecture linéaire, fournit les connaissances essentielles de pédologie générale. Cette partie présente successivement les constituants et les propriétés du sol, puis leurs effets sur les processus de formation et d'évolution. Fortement dépendantes de la vie, les formes d'humus font l'objet d'un chapitre particulier. La seconde, à la lecture modulaire, traite de sujets variés de biologie des sols, se rattachant tant à la pédologie fondamentale qu'appliquée. Des aspects aussi variés que la décomposition du bois mort, la formation de la tourbe ou encore la bioremédiation des sols sont discutés en détail. Une place importante est faite à la présentation des animaux du sol et de leur écologie, ainsi qu'aux symbioses rencontrées dans les sols et aux apports récents de la biologie moléculaire.
Cette nouvelle édition entièrement revue et augmentée présente un nouveau chapitre sur "La bioremédiation des sols contaminés", un domaine en pleine expansion lié à la dépollution des sols, dans lequel bactéries et plantes sont des acteurs majeurs. Le chapitre relatif aux techniques d'étude des micro-organismes du sol, en particulier celles faisant appel à la biologie moléculaire, a été entièrement mis à jourNote de contenu :
