Les avancées des deux dernières décennies ont permis le développement de nouveaux "objets" chimiques (structures organiques et inorganiques, complexes de coordination, structures cristallines, magnétiques, amorphes, nanométriques...) et de leurs méthodes de caractérisation. Ainsi, les spectroscopies mettant enjeu les vibrations des molécules sont devenues indispensables dans l'étude fine des objets aux frontières de la chimie, la physique et la biologie.
Les études vibrationnelles, avec une utilisation constante de la théorie des groupes de symétrie, sont le fil conducteur de l'ouvrage. L'exposé part des ions et molécules de haute symétrie pour aboutir aux solides cristallins. Les questions fondamentales sont développées en général à partir d'exemples, et des exercices avec leurs corrigés sont aussi proposés. Des compléments et des annexes permettent au lecteur d'élargir son information.
Ces annexes et de nombreuses tables de données permettent un travail autonome. Enfin, des guides de lecture, en introduction à chaque chapitre ou groupe de chapitres, mettent en évidence les articulations de l'ouvrage.
