Lucidly écrit et systématique dans le traitement, ce livre est un travail important sur la théorie de plusieurs corps et ses ramifications. Écrit par trois membres de l’Institut des problèmes physiques de l’Académie des sciences des États-Unis, cet ouvrage a été traduit et révisé par le rédacteur en chef Richard A. Silverman, connu pour ses nombreuses traductions d’œuvres russes dans le domaine des sciences mathématiques.
En utilisant les fonctions de Green pour leur approche méthodologique de base, les auteurs développent leur matériel en sept chapitres connexes. Le premier chapitre contient une discussion préliminaire de plusieurs sujets de base, notamment les excitations élémentaires, le liquide de Fermi et la seconde quantification. Les chapitres 2 et 3 présentent des méthodes parallèles de la théorie des champs quantiques pour T = O et T O, toutes deux faisant appel à la technique du diagramme. Les quatre derniers chapitres appliquent la technique et les autres informations apprises ici à une discussion de la théorie du liquide de Fermi, des systèmes de bosons en interaction, du rayonnement électromagnétique dans un milieu absorbant et de la théorie de la supraconductivité. Parmi les sujets abordés dans ces derniers chapitres figurent les interactions électron-photon, certaines propriétés d'un plasma dégénéré, le gaz de Bose non-idéal dilué, les propriétés du spectre des excitations à une particule près du point de coupure, les forces d'interaction moléculaire, le système d'équations de base pour un supraconducteur, et la théorie des alliages supraconducteurs.
Ce texte de base est indispensable aux scientifiques, physiciens et mathématiciens impliqués dans la physique statistique, en particulier la cryogénie et la physique de l'état solide.
