Smooth Manifolds and Observables concerne le calcul différentiel, les variétés lisses et l'algèbre commutative. Alors que ces théories sont apparues à des moments différents et dans des circonstances complètement différentes, ce livre montre comment elles constituent un tout unifié. La motivation derrière cette synthèse est la formalisation mathématique du processus d'observation en physique classique. L’objectif principal de ce livre est d’expliquer comment le calcul différentiel fait partie intégrante de l’algèbre commutative. Ceci est réalisé en étudiant les algèbres correspondantes des fonctions lisses qui conduisent à une construction générale du calcul différentiel sur différentes catégories de modules sur une algèbre commutative donnée. Il est montré en détail que le calcul différentiel ordinaire et la géométrie différentielle sur les variétés lisses s'avèrent être précisément le cas particulier qui correspond à la catégorie des modules géométriques sur des algèbres lisses. Cette approche ouvre la voie à de nombreuses applications allant des questions délicates de géométrie algébrique à la théorie des particules élémentaires. L'estimation de la fonction SemNonparamétrique avec des données stochastiques, également connues sous le nom de lissage, a été étudiée par plusieurs générations de statisticiens. A l'aide de la disponibilité récente d'un puissant pouvoir de calcul de bureau et d'ordinateur portable, les méthodes de lissage trouvent leur chemin dans l'analyse quotidienne des données par les praticiens. Alors que de nombreuses méthodes se sont révélées efficaces pour le lissage univarié, celles qui sont pratiques dans des contextes multivariés sont beaucoup moins nombreuses. Les modèles ANOVA de spline de lissage sont une famille polyvalente de méthodes de lissage dérivées de pénalités de rugosité adaptées aux problèmes univariés et multivariés. Dans ce livre, l'auteur présente un traitement complet du lissage des pénalités dans un cadre unifié. Les méthodes sont développées pour la régression avec des réponses gaussiennes et non gaussiennes ainsi que des données censées sur la durée de vie; densité et estimation de la densité conditionnelle dans une variété de schémas d'échantillonnage; et l'estimation du taux de risque avec des données de durée de vie et des covariables censurés. Les thèmes unificateurs sont la méthode générale de probabilité pénalisée et la construction de modèles multivariés avec des décompositions intégrées d'ANOVA. Des discussions approfondies sont consacrées à la construction du modèle, à la sélection des paramètres de lissage, au calcul et à la convergence asymptotique. La plupart des outils informatiques et analytiques de données décrits dans le livre sont implémentés dans R, un clone open source du langage S / S-PLUS populaire. Le code de régression a été distribué dans le paquet R gss disponible gratuitement via Internet sur CRAN, le réseau complet d'archives R.
