Cet ouvrage est une contribution à la question : comment faut-il comprendre la mécanique quantique ? La réponse que défend l'auteur est qu'il ne faut pas chercher à l'interpréter mais qu'il faut au contraire prendre au sérieux ce qu'elle dit explicitement, sans intermédiaire ni reformulation.
Cette perspective est défendue à partir de l'analyse d'un argument qui mobilise la mécanique quantique en faveur de la thèse émergentiste contre le réductionnisme. Sans chercher à arbitrer cette querelle de façon générale, l'auteur s'attache à montrer que cet argument est d'emblée biaisé par l'utilisation d'un langage qui ne convient pas à la mécanique quantique.
Seule une attention soutenue aux concepts propres à la mécanique quantique et à son langage peut nous permettre de saisir ce qu'elle nous invite à faire : revoir une bonne partie de notre système conceptuel et penser différemment.Note de contenu :

"Qui êtes-vous Albert Einstein pour dire à Dieu ce qu'il doit faire ?" lui répondit le physicien danois Niels Bohr, défenseur de cette théorie et qui disait également : "Quiconque n'est pas choqué par la théorie quantique ne la comprend pas." Aujourd'hui ce débat n'a plus lieu d'être, l'aspect probabiliste s'impose, renforcé par les résultats expérimentaux. L'objet de ce livre est une introduction à la mécanique quantique, limitée par les exigences des programmes des classes préparatoires aux grandes écoles. Les résultats et calculs mathématiques utilisés en physique quantique sont rarement justifiés dans les livres de physique, ou ne le sont que très partiellement. C'est la raison pour laquelle nous avons choisi de traiter dans un même ouvrage les deux aspects de la mécanique quantique : mathématiques et physique. Dans chaque chapitre, des exercices corrigés en détail permettent au lecteur d'assimiler le cours."

L'ouvrage de Richard Kerner, Méthodes classiques de physique théorique, arrive fort à propos. Ce n'est pas un nouvel ouvrage de mathématiques pour la physique - il en existe d'excellents - mais un ouvrage d'initiation à la physique théorique dont l'ambition est de faire découvrir aux élèves de licence certains aspects de sa démarche et de ses méthodes. Nourri par une longue expérience de recherche et d'enseignement, l'ouvrage met l'accent sur les méthodes géométriques en physique. C'est là un choix tout à fait judicieux car les approches géométriques imprègnent toutes les grandes théories physiques actuelles.
Dans un texte écrit dans un style clair, direct et expurgé de tout formalisme inutile, l'auteur fait partager au lecteur son intérêt pour les approches géométriques. Chaque chapitre est accompagné d'une série d'exercices corrigés permettant de vérifier que les concepts ont bien été assimilés. L'ouvrage de Richard Kerner, Méthodes classiques de physique théorique, arrive fort à propos. Ce n'est pas un nouvel ouvrage de mathématiques pour la physique - il en existe d'excellents - mais un ouvrage d'initiation à la physique théorique dont l'ambition est de faire découvrir aux élèves de licence certains aspects de sa démarche et de ses méthodes. Nourri par une longue expérience de recherche et d'enseignement, l'ouvrage met l'accent sur les méthodes géométriques en physique. C'est là un choix tout à fait judicieux car les approches géométriques imprègnent toutes les grandes théories physiques actuelles.
Dans un texte écrit dans un style clair, direct et expurgé de tout formalisme inutile, l'auteur fait partager au lecteur son intérêt pour les approches géométriques. Chaque chapitre est accompagné d'une série d'exercices corrigés permettant de vérifier que les concepts ont bien été assimilés. Ce livre original qui n'a pas d'équivalent en langue française est à recommander chaleureusement aux étudiants de L3 et de M1 intéressés par la physique fondamentaleNote de contenu :
