Il existe de très nombreux livres sur l'algèbre linéaire, et parmi ceux-ci, il en est d'excellents. On pourrait penser que les livres existants, les meilleurs tout au moins, contiennent tout ce qui est nécessaire, exposé de la meilleure façon, et donc que tout nouveau livre ne fera au mieux que répéter les anciens. En réalité, il apparaît constamment en algèbre linéaire des résultats nouveaux, tout comme apparaissent des démonstrations nouvelles, plus simples et plus claires de théorèmes connus. Nombre de ces résultats, obtenus dans les quarante dernières années, sont tout à fait accessibles, mais ils sont ignorés des manuels. Qui plus est, les manuels classiques ignorent plus d'un résultat ancien intéressant.
Telles sont les raisons qui ont conduit Victor Prasolov à composer cet ouvrage. Les notions élémentaires ne sont pas reprises, mais tous les théorèmes essentiels y figurent, et ils sont souvent accompagnés de résultats voisins originaux. Une place est faite à des idées récentes (inégalités matricielles, paires de Lax...), ainsi qu'à des questions classiques (algèbres de Clifford, problème de Hurwitz-Radon...) auxquelles la recherche actuelle a conféré un intérêt renouvelé.
L'ouvrage contient environ 230 problèmes, avec des solutions complètes. Il sera d'une très grande utilité pour les candidats aux concours des grandes écoles et à l'agrégation de mathématiques.Note de contenu :
