Il était temps de retracer l'histoire de la physique nucléaire. Bernard Fernandez vous prend par la main pour vous guider à travers les méandres d'une science compliquée mais passionnante. Utilisant la langue française ordinaire, sans jargon scientifique ni formules mathématiques, il s'adresse à la fois aux lecteurs spécialisés, à qui il offre une perspective historique de leur science, et à l'honnête homme, qui désire s'informer sans posséder de connaissances scientifiques particulières. Dans ce récit toujours vivant se mêlent personnages connus et moins connus, théories élaborées dans l'enthousiasme et parfois démolies ensuite, protocoles d'expériences et descriptions minutieuses d'instruments. Une idée-force du livre est en effet que jamais la théorie ne doit s'affranchir de la réalité expérimentale. Quelques bombes éclatent. Des bombes intellectuelles, excitantes pour l'esprit, mais aussi des bombes matérielles, destructrices et terrifiantes. Sous les yeux du lecteur s'élabore le paysage tourmenté d'une science qui a su attirer à elle des serviteurs passionnés et désintéressés, qui fut choyée par des hommes politiques tout à fait intéressés, qui a offert aux savants, devenus ensuite plus modestement des chercheurs, l'occasion d'éclaircir quelques-uns des mystères de la nature. Devenir adulte, c'est renoncer à certaines illusions. Adulte, la physique nucléaire a dû perdre l'illusion de pouvoir énoncer en une théorie simple et élégante la structure de la matière nucléaire, et accepter la définitive complexité de la réalité matérielle. Pour écrire ce livre l'auteur a dépouillé des centaines d'articles, lus dans leur langue originale. Ce retour aux sources, qui n'a jamais été fait auparavant, donne au livre un cachet d'authenticité qui le fera apprécier de ceux qui refusent les images d'Épinal et les idées reçues.Note de contenu :
