Ce chapitre a pous sujet principal la théorie des équations linéaires aux dérivées partielles, une des branches les plus importantes de l'Analyse, tant par ses répercussions dans beaucoup d'autres parties des mathématiques que par ses innombrables applications à la Mécanique, l'Astronomie et la Physique. Malgré sa longueur, il est très loin de constituer un exposé complet des connaissances actuelles dans ce domaine ; l'exposé a été limité aux trois types d'équations qui (en raison de leurs applications) ont été depuis 200 ans au premier plan des recherches : les équations elliptiques, hyperboliques et paraboliques, dont les prototypes sont respectivement l'équation de Laplace, l'équation des ondes et l'équation de la chaleur. Les résultats comprennent quelques-uns des plus grands succès de l'Analyse moderne, obtenus grâce à une fusion harmonieuse et féconde des méthodes classiques (intégration par parties, théorie de Cauchy des fonctions holomorphes, transformation de Fourier) et des idées issues de l'Analyse fonctionnelle "abstraite" ; tout au long du chapitre le lecteur aura donc l'occasion de voir intervenir de façon essentielle les notions et résultats développés dans tous les chapitres antérieurs. La première partie du chapitre, qui fait l'objet de cet ouvrage, est principalement consacrée, d'abord à l'étude des opérateurs intégraux (dont on n'a rencontré jusqu'ici que l'exemple le plus simple, l'opérateur de Fredholm), puis à la théorie des opérateurs pseudo-différentiels et de certaines de leurs généralisations. Grâce à la théorie des distributions, ces théories englobent à la fois les opérateurs différentiels et certains opérateurs intégraux et constituent les outils qui permettront d'attaquer dans la seconde partie du chapitre (tome 8), les principaux types de "problèmes aux limites"Note de contenu :

Il regroupe la quasi totalité des exercices proposés en travaux dirigés à l'Université des Antilles-Guyane durant les années 2002-03 et 2003-04, ainsi que les sujets de plus de 21 partiels ou examens donnés entre 1995 et 2004. Il sera utilisé avec profit par les candidats aux concours de recrutement de l'Education Nationale (CAPES et agrégation, tant externes qu'internes) en leur permettant de réviser des notions d'analyse ou de topologie fondamentales: espaces vectoriels normés, limites, continuité, topologie des espaces métriques, connexité et compacité, différentiabilité, recherche d'extrémums, Théorème des fonctions implicites... - L'ouvrage: L'objectif principal est de proposer à l'étudiant de licence comme au capésien ou à l'agrégatif, tout un ensemble d'exercices et de problèmes corrigés avec soin et suffisamment en détails pour permettre un véritable entraînement personnel. Les exercices et problèmes sont regroupés par thèmes. Cet ouvrage traite d'une manière simple, concise, claire et progressive les équations différentielles ordinaires et réserve une partie à leurs applications, notamment à la mécanique et à l'électricité.
