In addition, the cultivation of carefully selected SPUNTA and DESIREE potato tubers was srtudied after being irradiated with different gamma doses, varying from 10 to 150 Gy. The effects of gamma irradiation on plant growth, sugar and yield were thus analysed. Potato seed tubers were irradiated late three weeks before planting. Analysis of tuber progenies showed no mutations or changes in eye color and skin color and texture for low doses below 25 Gy. The percentage of plant emergence was optimal for the range of dose from 10 to 25 Gy. No plant emergence capacity was recorded from 55 Gy and 75 Gy for SPUNTA and DESIREE, respectively. Irradiation with doses of 10 to 25 Gy favored the formation of tubercles. There was no morphological growth from 25 Gy and no survival from 65 Gy and 85 Gy for SPUNTA and DESIREE, respectively. The effects of gamma radiation on irradiated but unplanted tubers show that the total sugar content increases from ~1.5% to ~3.5% for low doses and remains constant for the highest doses. The tubers produced from irradiated seeds planted have a constant sugar content even in the case of a dose variation and no influence of the irradiation on the consumption and total production of sugar was observed. This study also indicates that late irradiation with a low dose below 25 Gy (10 Gy) significantly increases the number of leaves of the plant (+~ 75%) and the growth capacity in terms of tuber's weight (15- 30 %).
