À travers les portraits d'une dizaine de géologues et paléontologues français, certains célèbres comme Joachim Barrande, Édouard de Verneuil ou Albert de Lapparent, et d'autres moins connus comme François-Dominique de Montlosier, Marie Rouault et Alexandre Béguyer de Chancourtois, c'est la diversité sociologique de la communauté géologique du XIXe siècle qui est soulignée. Des amateurs éclairés, parfois d'extraction fort modeste, et d'autres bénéficiant d'une confortable fortune personnelle, côtoyaient alors les membres du Corps des mines cumulant les charges et les honneurs. La postérité n'aura pas toujours retenu leurs noms alors que ceux de certains amateurs mus par leur seule passion auront laissé une empreinte durable dans la littérature scientifique. D'autres enfin, comme Amédée Burat et Henri Fayol, se sont faits connaître comme des praticiens respectés dans le domainede l'exploitation minière.
C'est donc un coup d'oeil circulaire sur d'anciens acteurs de la géologie française qui est proposé au lecteur. Celui-ci y retrouvera une façon d'étudier la géologie qui appartient à une époque révolue et dont on n'a plus idée aujourd'hui en raison d'une spécialisation croissante et d'une instrumentalisation galopante, facteurs inévitables du progrès scientifique.
Ce livre est le fruit de l'activité du Comité français d'histoire de la géologie qui a suscité, sous forme de communications orales, l'ensemble des articles biographiques qui le composent.
