Ce livre raconte l'histoire étonnante d'un phénomène mystérieux appelé radioactivité. Voulant toucher un large public, l'auteur décrit, sous la forme d'une fable des temps modernes, les divers événements historiques qui ont abouti à la découverte et l'interprétation de la radioactivité. Cette nouvelle science fut l'aboutissement des recherches de Becquerel, du couple Curie, de Giesel, etc. Le texte, bien documenté, est écrit en termes clairs de manière à être compris par tous. De nombreux détails techniques ont été évités, afin de favoriser une minutieuse description du contexte culturel et politique de l'époque, ce qui rend ce récit attrayant pour les professeurs et étudiants de tous niveaux, mais aussi pour les personnes curieuses en général.

Marjorie C. Malley a obtenu une licence en physique et en philosophie au M.I.T., une maîtrise dans l'art d'enseigner la science à Harvard, ainsi qu'un doctorat en histoire à l'Université de Californie à Berkeley. Depuis de nombreuses années, elle a été impliquée dans renseignement des sciences et des mathématiques, comprenant en cela l'enseignement proprement dit, mais aussi le développement de programmes d'études et la consultance. Parmi ses publications, on retrouve des articles concernant la radioactivité, la luminescence, la nature et l'histoire des sciences, voire des sujets biographiques.
Traduction de l'anglais par Paul Depovere docteur en sciences chimiques, pharmacien et candidat en sciences médicales. Professeur émérite, il a enseigné la chimie générale, organique et pharmaceutique à l'université catholique de Louvain (UCL-Bruxelles) et à l'université Laval (Québec). Il est l'auteur de divers ouvrages de chimie (dont La chimie dans tous ses états ; le bêtisier commenté de la chimie ainsi qu'une BD, La découverte de la chimie) et est le traducteur réputé de plusieurs grands traités (dont la Chimie organique de K. Cet ouvrage présente une revue critique des apports des recherches en didactique des sciences sur la définition des contenus d'enseignement au niveau secondaire. Il propose des exemples tirés des propres travaux de l'auteur ou issus de la communauté des didacticiens des sciences. Il étudie ensuite la question de la désaffection pour les études scientifiques à travers une revue critique d'auteurs ou de rapports d'origine institutionnelle.
Il montre que le phénomène est multifactoriel et qu'il est difficile de sélectionner un paramètre unique déterminant. L'ouvrage aborde également cette question sous l'angle de l'image des sciences physiques et de son enseignement auprès des élèves du secondaire. S'appuyant sur les apports de la didactique, l'auteur montre qu'une des voies d'action envisageable pour lutter contre le phénomène de désintérêt pour les études scientifiques est d'agir sur les contenus d'enseignement et de formation des enseignants.

Le but du présent ouvrage est, en partant de considérations historiques, de décrire l'état actuel de cette discipline dont les méthodes apparaissent comme un outil indispensable dans de multiples domaines. Depuis l'analyse des spectres astrophysiques enregistrés par le Hubble Space Télescope jusqu'à l'étude des oeuvres d'art en archéométrie, en ne négligeant pas les contributions relatives à l'environnement, à la métrologie, aux recherches à caractère militaire, à l'industrie des matériaux ou aux sciences biomédicales, la spectroscopie a accru de manière considérable son impact sur de multiples domaines qui relèvent des sciences pures et appliquées.
Cet ouvrage a pour ambition de synthétiser les principaux aspects de cette science en mutation.
La première partie initie le lecteur à l'instrumentation à laquelle il est fait appel pour disperser la lumière et elle décrit ensuite les principales sources ainsi que les détecteurs de radiation. Une partie des secrets véhiculés par la lumière nous est transmise par la spectroscopie. Depuis l'époque de Newton, considéré comme le père de la spectroscopie, jusqu'au XXIe siècle, cette science a connu des avancées multiples et souvent très spectaculaires. Un seul exemple : il suffit de penser à l'impact extraordinaire et universel dû à la découverte du laser ! Le but du présent ouvrage est, en partant de considérations historiques, de décrire l'état actuel de cette discipline dont les méthodes apparaissent comme un outil indispensable dans de multiples domaines. Depuis l'analyse des spectres astrophysiques enregistrés par le Hubble Space Télescope jusqu'à l'étude des oeuvres d'art en archéométrie, en ne négligeant pas les contributions relatives à l'environnement, à la métrologie, aux recherches à caractère militaire, à l'industrie des matériaux ou aux sciences biomédicales, la spectroscopie a accru de manière considérable son impact sur de multiples domaines qui relèvent des sciences pures et appliquées.
Cet ouvrage a pour ambition de synthétiser les principaux aspects de cette science en mutation.
La première partie initie le lecteur à l'instrumentation à laquelle il est fait appel pour disperser la lumière et elle décrit ensuite les principales sources ainsi que les détecteurs de radiation. La seconde partie étudie les structures et les spectres atomiques, des plus simples au plus complexes. Elle s'attarde aussi sur l'interaction de la radiation avec les atomes ou sur l'effet des champs extérieurs qu'ils soient électriques ou magnétiques.
Ce livre s'adresse aux étudiants en 3e année de Licence et en Master de physique, de chimie, de biologie, et en écoles d'ingénieurs. Il intéressera également les chercheurs et doctorants ayant pour objet d'étude cette matière ou plus spécialisés en astrophysique.
