Une approche complète : La Mécanique classique de John Taylor s'adresse aux étudiants de licence déjà familiarisés avec les bases de la mécanique. L'auteur y approfondit les notions fondamentales, puis développe des thèmes plus avancés tels que la formulation lagrangienne, la formulation hamiltonienne, la mécanique dans les référentiels non-inertiels, le mouvement des corps rigides, les oscillateurs couplés, la théorie du chaos, la relativité restreinte et plusieurs autres notions complexes. Certains physiciens incluant la relativité dans le corpus de la mécanique classique, cette branche de la mécanique est également abordée dans cet ouvrage.
Une approche progressive : Le livre est divisé en deux parties : la première partie contient onze chapitres "essentiels" qui devraient être lus intégralement et dans l'ordre, alors que la seconde contient cinq chapitres "optionnels" indépendants les uns des autres. Chaque chapitre se termine par un grand nombre d'exercices corrigés, permettant notamment à l'étudiant de s'entraîner au traitement numérique par ordinateur.
