Les plasmas complexes sont des plasmas poussiéreux dans lesquels la densité et les charges électriques des grains de poussière sont suffisamment élevées pour induire des interactions grain à grain à longue distance, ainsi qu'une forte absorption des composants du plasma chargé. Avec les sources reconstituant le plasma, ces systèmes forment un système thermodynamiquement ouvert hautement dissipatif qui présente de nombreuses caractéristiques de comportement collectif généralement rencontrées dans les systèmes complexes. Cet ouvrage décrit une méthodologie et un savoir-faire pour la construction effective de modèles en analyse d'images. Les tâches d'imagerie y sont le plus souvent formalisées comme des problèmes inverses solutionnés dans un cadre Bayesien. Ce livre est organisé en 3 parties. Les 2 premières décrivent les bases nécessaires aux modèles développés dans la troisième partie sous la forme d' énergie. Ces bases sont les splines et les champs aléatoires. La plupart des modèles sont issus de projets industriels auxquels l'auteur a participé en radiographie et en contrôle non déstructif: suivi de lignes 3D, traitement de dégradation en radiographie, reconstruction 3D et tomographie, mise en correspondance, apprentissage de déformations. La puissance de l'outil ainsi façonné est énormément affichée dans le chapitre II des Théories Spectrales de l'auteur, une exposition, en seulement 38 pages, d'une analyse harmonique abstraite et de la structure des groupes abéliens localement compacts. Le volume actuel comprend les chapitres 1-6 en traduction anglaise (un deuxième volume contiendra les chapitres 7 à 9 restants). Les fascicules individuels de l'édition française originale ont fait l'objet d'un examen approfondi. Les chapitres 1-5 ont reçu des révisions très importantes dans une deuxième édition, y compris des modifications apportées à certaines définitions fondamentales. Les chapitres 6-8 sont basés sur les premières éditions de Chs. 1-5. L'édition anglaise a donné à l'auteur la possibilité de corriger les erreurs d'écriture, de mettre à jour les références, de clarifier la concordance du chapitre 6 avec les deuxièmes éditions des chapitres 1-5 et de réviser la définition d'un concept clé dans le chapitre 6 (relations d'équivalence mesurables).
