Voici un ouvrage de base sur la radioactivité qui peut permettre aussi bien une première initiation qu'un approfondissement des connaissances. Ni le nombre de pages, ni les formules mathématiques qui apparaissent ici ou là ne doivent effrayer : le livre a en effet été conçu pour une lecture à plusieurs niveaux. De plus, si les cinq premiers chapitres sont incontournables pour les non-initiés, tous les autres sont les pièces d'un menu à la carte que l'on peut pratiquement aborder dans un ordre quelconque. Après quelques rappels sur la classification des atomes, le début du livre explique le pourquoi et le comment de la radioactivité, avec une présentation des différents modes de désintégration : à ce stade, les seuls outils mathématiques nécessaires sont les quatre opérations !
On aborde ensuite les rapports entre la radioactivité et le temps avant d'expliquer comment l'équivalence masse-énergie se manifeste au cours des désintégrations. Puis deux chapitres traitent, l'un des radionucléides naturels, l'autre des radionucléides artificiels. En écho à chacun d'eux se déclinent des points de repère historiques d'abord sur l'étonnante série de découvertes qui a abouti à la connaissance approfondie des désinÂtégrations radioactives, puis sur la construction de noyaux de plus en plus lourds couronÂnée par la découverte de nouveaux éléments artificiels.
Le livre se termine par une présentation des radionucléides utilisés en médecine (scintigraphie, radiothérapie) ou en archéologie et dans les sciences de la terre (méthodes de datation), avant de proposer un inventaire des produits radioactifs qui se forment dans les centrales nucléaires productrices d'électricité. S'y ajoutent plus de 200 exercices, dont les solutions sont données à la fin du livre au milieu de différentes annexes.Note de contenu :
