Lorsqu'il ouvrait le premier "Conseil"qu'il avait réuni à Bruxelles le 30 octobre 1911, Ernest Solvay, industriel et mécène, ne pouvait imaginer l'immense retentissement qu'aurait son initiative pour l'histoire des sciences. Les Conseils Solvay de physique ont été l'un de ces lieux où "se fait" la science. Le Conseil célébrissime de 1911 a révélé le rôle incontournable des étranges quanta dans le monde microscopique, et le Conseil non moins fameux de 1927 a vu l'affrontement titanesque entre Einstein et Bohr sur l'interprétation à donner à la nouvelle théorie. Les Conseils viennent ainsi rythmer régulièrement les avancées de cette oeuvre collective qu'est la physique quantique en train de se construire. A travers les sept premiers Conseils Solvay, c'est l'histoire de la naissance de la physique moderne que donne à lire cet ouvrage. On y voit une science faite de doutes, d'hésitations, de brusques accélérations, de soudaines illuminations, une science pleinement humaine. On y voit l'intelligence à l'oeuvre, dont les acteurs sont Einstein, Marie Curie, Bohr, Rutherford, Planck, Lorentz, Langevin, Heisenberg, Pauli, Dirac, au total cent physiciens de tout premier plan dont quarante titulaires du prix Nobel. On y voit des hommes et des femmes enrôlés par la même passion de comprendre le monde, mais aussi engagés dans leur siècle, pour la défense de la paix, contre le fascisme. Cette"naissance de la physique moderne" constitue à la fois une introduction à la physique des quanta et une plongée dans l'humain.
