La production d'énergie est au coeur des préoccupations de tous les États. Depuis quelques dizaines d'années, les énergies fossiles, qui sont les plus consommées, affectent le climat en émettant des gaz à effet de serre, et les variations qui en résultent paraissent insupportables.
Le monde scientifique se trouve face à un énorme défi : soit permettre à tous d'accéder à l'énergie selon les modalités existantes, soit inventer un nouveau mode de production énergétique indispensable au développement.
Si l'énergie issue de la fission d'éléments lourds est maîtrisée depuis un demi-siècle tant au plan militaire que civil, il en va très différemment de l'énergie issue de la fusion des éléments légers (hydrogène, deutérium et tritium). En effet, cette fusion ne peut intervenir qu'à des températures très élevées, ce qui pose des problèmes inédits. Les recherches ont permis de réaliser la fusion pendant quelques secondes, établissant que la méthode est possible. L'isolation des volumes où se produit la fusion se fait selon deux voies : la voie du confinement magnétique, dont les réacteurs Tokamaks ont montré la faisabilité, et la voie du confinement inertiel, dont le principe a été vérifié. Il faut noter cependant que toutes ces expériences consomment jusqu'à présent plus d'énergie qu'elles n'en produisent.
Même si la faisabilité de la fusion est chose établie, son exploitation industrielle reste encore très éloignée. L'importance des travaux dans chacune de ces voies implique une coopération internationale qui s'est organisée autour de la voie du confinement magnétique : Iter et IFMIF associent la Communauté européenne, le Japon, les États-Unis, la Chine, la Russie, la Corée et l'Inde.
Il n'est pas du rôle de l'Académie des sciences de dégager le poids relatif que les États doivent consacrer aux énergies renouvelables, aux économies d'énergie et aux travaux scientifiques prospectifs, mais il est raisonnable d'aborder cette question de la fusion en tant que telle. C'est pourquoi ce rapport en présente les caractéristiques essentielles en faisant le point sur les connaissances scientifiques et techniques acquises, et sur les pistes des recherches à entreprendre avant de pouvoir construire des usines productrices d'énergie.
Cet ouvrage a regroupé des spécialistes engagés dans les travaux les plus théoriques et dans les expériences de confinement magnétique et de confinement inertiel. L'Académie a souhaité en outre présenter les conséquences immédiates, pour la France, de son association avec les partenaires d'IterNote de contenu :

C'est une aventure singulière initiée dans les années 1950. Une communauté scientifique internationale, soutenue par les pouvoirs publics des nations les plus riches, s'est fixée pour objectif de réaliser la fusion d'éléments légers afin de contribuer à la production d'électricité. Quand ? Comment ? A quel prix ?
Autant de questions aux réponses incertaines. Les bases physiques de la fusion nucléaire sont connues depuis longtemps. Elles ont conduit à de vastes programmes lancés vers 1970 dans deux directions : les tokamaks pour le confinement magnétique et les lasers multifaisceaux pour le confinement inertiel. Jusqu'aux étapes clés actuelles que sont ITER et les lasers mégajoule, les avancées ont été spectaculaires mais insuffisantes.
Après plus d'un demi-siècle de recherches et de développement, la preuve n'est toujours pas apportée d'une énergie de fusion supérieure à l'énergie investie dans le fonctionnement du dispositif Il faudra encore de longs délais avant d'envisager une exploitation industrielle, un autre demi-siècle peut-être ?
Si d'autres recherches se poursuivent en marge, notamment sur les systèmes hybrides fusion-fission, le réacteur à fusion tel qu'on l'imagine en 2011 se situe dans le prolongement des deux grandes filières que sont les tokamaks et la voie inertielle par laser.
L'avenir n'est pas écrit. La seule certitude est que si l'on parvient à maîtriser la fusion thermonucléaire, l'humanité disposera d'une ressource très abondante pour satisfaire sa demande d'énergie électrique, sans émission de gaz à effet de serre et avec une radioactivité posant moins de problèmes que celle de l'énergie de fission.Note de contenu :

Chaque progrès dans la compréhension des lois fondamentales de la nature a impliqué de nouveaux aspects de l'application de la notion de symétrie. Dans ces conditions, bien que de nombreux ouvrages aient traité de ce sujet, il semble utile de l'examiner à nouveau dans le contexte le plus récent.
Cet ouvrage, issu de cours variés et de notes personnelles de l'auteur, s'adresse en premier lieu aux étudiants de masters, aux doctorants, aux jeunes chercheurs et enseignants. Le niveau mathématique cherche à rester aussi élémentaire que possible pour être accessible, et donc utile à un large public scientifique.

Une approche physique de la mécanique des fluides, proposée dès sa version initiale (1991) par les trois enseignants chercheurs auteurs d'Hydrodynamique physique, a connu un grand succès. Ce livre, devenu rapidement un classique en France et à l'étranger, a été réédité dix ans plus tard dans une version considérablement enrichie, suite à de nombreux échanges avec les collègues et les étudiants qui l'avaient utilisé.
Après un nouvel intervalle de dix ans, cet ouvrage a été revu en profondeur tout en conservant son style qui privilégie les arguments physiques, les raisonnements intuitifs et les calculs simples ; il donne une large part aux approches expérimentales et présente une iconographie renouvelée. Dans cette nouvelle édition, l'image joue un rôle accru en tirant souvent parti des nouveaux outils numériques, comme en témoigne le cahier central en couleurs destiné à stimuler la curiosité du lecteur.
Il était devenu indispensable de prendre en compte les évolutions considérables de l'hydrodynamique qui associe de plus en plus étroitement physiciens et mécaniciens ; le contenu de la présente édition reflète également une ouverture croissante vers d'autres domaines des sciences expérimentales telles que les sciences de la nature et du vivant, le génie des procédés ou les sciences de l'environnement. Cet ouvrage intéressera donc les chercheurs et les ingénieurs de tous ces domaines, à côté des physiciens et des mécaniciens.
Ce livre fournit un panorama extrêmement riche des écoulements de la matière, fluide ou presque fluide. De plus, il ne s'égare jamais dans les calculs, qui peuvent être vus comme des exercices d'application, avant d'en avoir dégagé des principes.
