La théorie des files d’attente est utilisée pour la description et la résolution de problèmes liés aux systèmes et réseaux de transmission de données (évaluation des performances : débit, temps d’attente, probabilité de refus ou de perte, charge (load),….). Ce manuel montre le cheminement de la modélisation analytique à la modélisation par simulation, en passant par la résolution algorithmique et numérique. Il ne s’agit pas simplement d’évaluer les caractéristiques probabilistes (mesures de performance), mais aussi d’estimer convenablement la signification statistique des résultats de simulation. Les différents types de modélisation et/ou de résolution montrent, sur l’exemple des problèmes de files d’attente, comment aborder de manière rationnelle les problèmes entachés d’incertitude. Les notions classiques de probabilités et statistiques sont supposées connues et sont donc rappelées sans démonstrations. Le manuel a été conçu pour servir de guide de travaux pratiques sur ordinateur.
