Objet géologique majeur de notre planète, la croûte océanique couvre les deux tiers de la surface solide du globe. Solidaire des plaques lithosphériques, elle naît au niveau des dorsales océaniques puis voyage pendant des dizaines de millions d'années en position de plancher marin. Elle termine son parcours en surface dans les grandes fosses océaniques où elle retourne dans le manteau terrestre dont elle est issue, à l'exception de quelques fragments-les ophiolites ;-incorporés dans les chaînes de montagnes où on peut les étudier à l'air libre.
Après avoir exposé les méthodes d'études spécifiques du fond des océans, les auteurs décrivent les différentes phases de cet immense cycle naturel : le magmatisme et l'hydrothermalisme actifs de l'axe des dorsales, responsables de l'édification des différentes couches de la croûte océanique ;les modalités de la migration de celle-ci dans les grands fonds marins, où elle se recouvre progressivement de sédiments et parfois de grands volcans lors de son passage au-dessus des points chauds ; son enfoncement par subduction, responsable des séismes et du volcanisme explosif des arcs et, enfin, son recyclage ultime dans le manteau profond.
Gabbros océaniques forés pour la première fois en place dans la croûte océanique du Pacifique oriental ; mise en évidence des réservoirs magmatiques sous-jacents aux dorsales lentes ; imagerie géophysique et géochimique des différents types de points chauds et leurs interactions avec les dorsales ; fonctionnement des zones de subduction et preuves du recyclage de la croûte océanique au niveau de la limite manteau-noyau : les découvertes les plus récentes sont également décrites en détail.
Cartes, schémas et photographies en couleurs viennent abondamment illustrer la formation et l'évolution du fond des océans, de l'échelle du cristal à celle du volcanNote de contenu :
