Ce livre est un cours et affiche donc d'emblée une vocation pédagogique. Son style en témoigne, qui ne craint pas les répétitions, souvent nombreuses lorsqu'il faut insister sur une notion importante. Le texte, conçu comme un tout, est plutôt destiné à une lecture exhaustive, mais il est possible, néanmoins, de ne s'intéresser qu'à tel ou tel paragraphe, grâce aux nombreuses références à d'autres parties qui permettent facilement de retrouver les notions indispensables à la compréhension d'un paragraphe isolé. Par ailleurs, un certain nombre de développements ont été reportés en annexe, afin de ne pas alourdir exagérément le texte et de permettre leur omission lors d'une première lecture.
Après un bref rappel sur les caractéristiques physiques, ce cours présente de quelle manière les sols peuvent bénéficier du formalisme de la mécanique des milieux continus, tout en ayant la particularité d'être polyphasiques. C'est à ce niveau qu'une discussion approfondie met en lumière la nécessité d'utiliser comme référentiel, dans certains cas, le seul assemblage des particules solides, conduisant ainsi à la délicate approche de la notion de contrainte effective. L'exposé se poursuit par l'examen de toutes les conséquences auxquelles on peut parvenir en appliquant uniquement le principe fondamental de la mécanique, et la formule de Darcy pour caractériser l'écoulement de l'eau.
Un chapitre entier traite ensuite des solutions - dont la validité pour les sols est discutée à chaque fois - que permettent d'obtenir successivement, une loi de comportement simple comme l'élasticité linéaire, et la théorie de la plasticité grâce à l'utilisation du critère de Coulomb.
La dernière partie est consacrée à la confrontation des résultats théoriques acquis à ce niveau de l'exposé, avec les informations qui proviennent des essais classiques réalisés - en laboratoire ou in situ - sur les différents types de sols. Cette confrontation permet de dégager quelques idées générales sur le comportement de ces matériaux en distinguant les sols grenus (sables, graviers... ), des sols cohérents (argiles, vases... ).
Les "ouvrages" ne sont pas abordés en tant que tels dans cette présentation; ils font, en effet, l'objet de recueils spécialisés (fondations, stabilité des pentes, renforcement des sols, soutènements... ) qui s'appuient largement sur les considérations développées ici.
Le texte constitue, à quelques détails près, le reflet aussi fidèle que possible du cours de mécanique des sols dispensé dans le cadre de la première année du Département Ingénieur Géotechnicien de l'Institut des Sciences et Techniques de Grenoble (I.S.TG.) à l'Université Joseph FOURIER. A ce titre il rassemble tout à la fois, les notions classiques pour un tel cours, et les points particuliers qu'il s'est révélé utile de développer, durant les années qui ont vu se succéder plus de douze promotions d'ingénieurs.
Ce livre fait suite à une première ébauche parue en 1989 et, malgré les modifications, les ajouts et les nombreuses corrections, l'auteur en appelle à l'indulgence du lecteur (dont les remarques seront toujours les bienvenues) pour les erreurs matérielles qui peuvent y subsister, ainsi que pour les omissions volontaires ou involontaires.
Pour conclure, je n'oublierai pas de remercier tous ceux qui directement ou indirectement m'ont apporté leur concours et plus particulièrement mes élèves, mais aussi les professeurs qui m'ont enseigné la mécanique des sols : Henri Cambefort, Jean Biarez et surtout Jean-Pierre Giroud, sans lequel cet ouvrage n'aurait sans doute jamais vu le jour.
