Comme tous les livres d'Arnold, ce livre fait un large appel à l'intuition géométrique (chaque idée est illustrée par une figure).
L'ouvrage, issu d'une série de cours donnés à des étudiants de 3e année de l'université indépendante de Moscou, couvre les aspects fondamentaux de la théorie des EDP :
équations du premier ordre, problèmes de Cauchy et de Neumann pour les EDP linéaires classiques de la physique mathématique.
A la différence de beaucoup d'auteurs de l'école française, Arnold ne fait pas appel à l'analyse fonctionnelle, ce qui lui permet de s'adresser à des étudiants en mathématiques encore non spécialisés, ainsi qu'à des physiciens.
Son but est en fait de dégager quelques notions fondamentales telles que énergie, principes variationnels, lagrangien, principe de Huygens, dualité ondes-particules, transformation de Legendre, valeurs propres et vecteurs propres... souvent issues de la physique, mais qui ont joué, et jouent encore à notre époque, un rôle essentiel dans la constitution des mathématiques modernes. A ses yeux, la familiarité avec ces notions est essentielle à tout mathématicien.

Ce manuel est destiné aux étudiants souhaitant se familiariser avec la théorie des équations di ‐ essentielles partielles (EDP), en particulier celles de type elliptique. Ainsi, il n’offre pas une vue d’ensemble complète sur le domaine des EDP, mais essaie de guider le lecteur vers les méthodes les plus importantes et les principaux résultats dans le cas des EDP elliptiques. La question qui se pose est de savoir comment on peut trouver une solution à un tel PDE. Bien entendu, une telle solution dépendra de contraintes données et, à son tour, si les contraintes sont du type approprié, elles seront déterminées par elles. Nous poursuivrons un certain nombre de stratégies pour: Trouver une solution d’EDP; ils peuvent être caractérisés de manière informelle comme suit: (0) Écrivez une formule explicite pour la solution en termes de données données (contraintes). Cela peut sembler l’approche la meilleure et la plus naturelle, mais cela n’est possible que dans des cas assez particuliers et spéciaux. En outre, une telle formule peut être assez compliquée, de sorte qu’elle n’est pas très utile pour détecter les propriétés qualitatives d’une solution. Par conséquent, l'analyse mathématique a développé d'autres approches plus puissantes.
