Les grands théorèmes d'analyse présentés dans cet ouvrage sont le fruit de travaux accomplis tout au long du vingtième siècle dans le sillage de l'oeuvre fondatrice des anglais G. H. Hardy et J. E. Littlewood. Un juste tribut est également rendu aux écoles mathématiques polonaise, russe et française. D'autres très grands noms de mathématiciens sont associés à ces théorèmes : Ramanu-jan (le génie découvert par Hardy), Banach et Wiener ("créateurs d'espaces", comme les appelle si joliment Gilles Godefroy dans sa préface), Baire et Lebesgue, Newman, Gelfand, Carleson...
De la réciproque du théorème d'Abel sur les séries de puissances aux théorèmes taubériens, du paradoxe de Banach-Tarski à la preuve de la conjecture de Littlewood, des propriétés génériques des fonctions dérivées à l'utilisation des lois binomiales en combinatoire, de l'équation fonctionnelle approchée de la fonction θ0 de Jacobi au théorème de la couronne de Carleson, le lecteur pourra découvrir au fil de cet ouvrage quelques uns des résultats les plus profonds et les plus marquants de l'analyse moderne.
Souvent difficiles, ces questions sont exposées sans nulle concession quant à la rigueur, mais avec un grand talent pédagogique. Les auteurs ont le souci de les situer en permanence dans une perspective historique et ils nous font suivre avec ténacité les fils conducteurs qui donnent une grande cohérence à l'ensemble.
L'ouvrage s'adresse aux étudiants en licence ou master, ainsi qu'aux agrégatifs et, bien sûr, aux amoureux des belles mathématiques.
Hervé Queffélec est professeur à l'Université de Lille 1. Ses travaux portent sur l'analyse fonctionnelle et harmonique, ainsi que sur les méthodes probabilistes en analyse. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs livres, parmi lesquels "Topologie" (Dunod), et coauteur avec Claude Zuily de "Analyse pour l'agrégation", (Dunod). Denis Choimet est professeur en classes préparatoires MP* au Lycée du Parc à Lyon.
