Ce territoire, d’origine gondwanienne, a été le théâtre d’événements géologiques extraordinaires depuis le Crétacé : submersions, nappage ultramafique, et communication intermittente avec l’Australie et la Nouvelle-Zélande. La richesse, l’originalité et l’endémisme de la faune néo-calédonienne sont exceptionnels et témoignent de cette histoire régionale fascinante, avec nombre de groupes relictes ou de spécialisations écologiques uniques. Cette biodiversité est analysée dans le présent volume qui fait le bilan des connaissances acquises sur différents groupes d’insectes, d’acariens et de reptiles. Douze contributions rassemblent les descriptions de 103 espèces nouvelles et de 3 genres nouveaux et présentent de nombreuses informations biologiques inédites. Au-delà du recensement de la richesse régionale, ces études posent le problème de l’origine et de la préservation de cette biodiversité. On the other hand, this biodiversity is more and more threatened by multiple landscape use and its deleterious consequences. In this context, systematic studies such as those from Zoologia Neocaledonica are strongly needed as both a background and a primary source of knowledge, invaluable for evolutionary studies and land management policies. This volume comprises 11 contributions bearing on Insects, with the description of more than 80 species and 10 genera as new for Science from New Caledonia. A forthcoming volume will include the studies carried out on Arthropods other than Insects, Mollusks, and Vertebrates.
