Parasitic drug resistance poses a significant challenge in the treatment and control of parasitic infections worldwide. This phenomenon, driven by genetic adaptation in parasite populations, undermines the effectiveness of drugs intended to eliminate or suppress parasitic organisms. The emergence of resistance is influenced by factors such as improper drug use, suboptimal dosing, and inadequate treatment regimens. As a result, treatment failures and increased morbidity and mortality rates are observed, exacerbating the burden of parasitic diseases on public health. To address this pressing issue, it is crucial to comprehend the mechanisms underlying parasitic drug resistance. Parasites employ various strategies to evade the effects of drugs, including metabolic alterations, reduced drug uptake, and enhanced efflux mechanisms. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for developing effective strategies to counteract drug resistance. Several approaches have been proposed to mitigate the impact of parasitic drug resistance. These include the development of new drugs with novel mechanisms of action, optimization of treatment regimens to prevent the spread of resistance, and implementation of surveillance programs to monitor resistance patterns. Additionally, integrated control strategies that combine drug therapy with other interventions, such as vector control and improved sanitation, are essential for managing parasitic infections in the face of drug resistance. |
