Résumé : |
Balanites aegyptiaca is a desert plant from the Zygophyllaceae family, used in many traditional medical and pharmaceutical treatments because it contains biologically active compounds. This study aims to estimate the amount of polyphenols and flavonoids and study the antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extract of the leaves of the Egyptian Heglig plant by applying several tests, namely: DPPH radical scavenging test, H2O2 hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging test, iron chelation test, and lipid oxidation inhibition test using each of the following: Test (FTC) ferric thiocyanate and (TBA) Thiobarburic, The ethanolic extract of the Balanites plant contains polyphenols in an amount estimated at 22.861±1.011 mg/mL gallic acid equivalents/mg dry weight of the extract, as well as 0.060±0.006 mg/mL quercetin equivalent dry weight for flavonoids. The results also showed a scavenging effect on the DPPH radicals of the extract with IC50=0.859±0.067 mg/mL compared to BHT, which recorded an effect of 0.0260±0.0006 mg/mL. As for the H2O2 radical scavenging test, it showed an activity estimated at 6.460±0.068 mg/mL compared to Vitamin C as a positive control, whose scavenging was estimated at 0.017±0.001 mg/mL, and the extract also showed a significant ability to chelate iron with 0.619±0.092mg/mL, compared to the reference control EDTA, whose value was estimated at 0.0033±0.0005 mg/mL, while Regarding the lipid oxidation inhibition test, the extract showed a fairly inhibitory ability in both the FTC and TBA tests, where it showed significant activity estimated, respectively, 18.323% , 3.484%.Through the results obtained, it is possible to confirm the significant activity of the Balanite plant in removing free radicals and considering it a good source of antioxidants. |
