This study was conducted to evaluate the anticoagulant and antithrombotic activities of Anabasis articulata (Chenopodiaceae), which is abundant in the desert and known as “Ajram”. The tests were conducted using ethanolic extract of A.articulata at different concentrations and applied to the plasma of healthy individuals. The prothrombin time, clotting time, and thrombolytic activity were measured. The results indicate that the ethanolic extract of the plant A. articulata can extend clotting time to 0.05 ± 5.42 minutes at a concentration of 50 mg/mL, which is an optimal concentration compared to the positive control (sodium citrate) that did not show any clotting. Additionally, the same extract demonstrated a concentration-dependent effect on plasma clotting time, with a negative correlation between the two. Furthermore, the ethanolic extract of A. articulata delays blood clotting by 10.66 ± 3.07 minutes at a concentration of 20 mg/mL, which is more effective than the positive control (sodium citrate) that showed no clotting. Moreover, the extract exhibited strong anticoagulant activity with a value of 8.63 ± 0.46% at a concentration of 50 mg/mL, compared to sodium citrate 0.69 ± 35.58%. In conclusion, these results can be considered very promising and call for further research and studies in order to produce a more effective and less side effect plant based anticoagulant. |
