Diabetes is one of the most dangerous chronic disease that threaten human health, affecting all age groups worldwide. There is no definitive cure for this disease, but diabetic patients can avoid various complications by taking continuous treatment. To identify the medicinal plants used to treat this disease, we conducted our research in the Sétif province (Sétif, El Eulma, Bir El Arch, Belaa, Ain Azel, Ain Arnat, Ain Oulmene) from March to April 2024. We conducted direct interviews with 60 diabetic patients and 40 herbalists using a questionnaire, and we were able to collect twenty-eight plants belonging to 19 families, with the most representative being the Lamiaceae family. The most commonly used plants are wormwood (39%), olive leaves (33%), cinnamon (30%), and fenugreek (21%). The results of this study revealed that leaves and roots are the most commonly used parts of the plants, accounting for 54%. We also found that plants are often used orally in the form of herbal tea, either by boiling or steeping in hot water (70%). Regarding the use of herbal medicine, 51.78% of patients did not use medicinal plants, while 48.22% resorted to herbal treatment. Among those who used this treatment, 16.27% were very satisfied, 68.54% were satisfied, while 15.19% were disappointed. We also noticed an increase in the consumption of plants by patients with type 2 diabetes, regardless of their age group, gender, or educational level. |
