Myrtle (Myrtus communis L., Myrtaceae) is a medicinal herb found in Western Asia, Southern Europe and North Africa, including Algeria. It was mentioned in the holy books and its name is associated with peace, love, beauty and purity. It has been used worldwide in traditional medicine, in cosmetics and cooking... This herb has many components that have been separated. Polyphenols, myrtucommulone (MC), 1, 8-cineole, α-pinene, myrtenyl acetate, limonene, linalool and α-terpinolene which are the compounds considered to be the main biologically active components. For several centuries, this herb’s berries, leaves and fruits have all been widely employted in traditional medicine. It is traditionally used to treat conditions like diarrhea, peptic ulcer, hemorrhoids, inflammation, pulmonary and skin diseases. Although clinical and experimental studies indicate that the herb possesses a wider spectrum of pharmacological and therapeutic effects such as antioxidative, anticancer, antidiabetic, antiviral, antibacterial, hepatoprotective and neuroprotective activity. |
