La Diffusion de la lumière est le phénomène qui permet aux objets d'être perceptibles parl'œil. Lorsque l'objet est éclairé, il remet alors la lumière qu'il reçoit dans toutes les directions, ce qui lui permet d'être visible Les astronomes sont les premiers à s'être intéressés à l'étude de la diffusion lumineuse. L’observation des étoiles était gênée par les pertes dues aux interactions de la lumière avec les poussières présentes dans l'espace. Ils souhaitaient donc l'éliminer afin de mieux voir les étoiles. Cependant ces études ont permis de montrer que la diffusion était plus qu'un bruit masquant l'observation de la lumière des étoiles. Elle contient, en effet, une information riche sur les objets diffusants ayant interagi avec la lumière et permet de les caractériser. Les propriétés du faisceau incident (son amplitude, sa polarisation) sont modifiées après diffusion. La diffusion est depuis utilisée comme outil pour caractériser les objets éclairés. L'avantage de cette caractérisation est qu'elle se fait a distance. Nous avons présenté dans ce mémoire une étude théorique et expérimentale portant sur la diffusion de la lumière par des surfaces optiques de différentes tailles des particules pour voir la relation entre la lumière diffusée et la rugosité de ces surfaces. |
