Real timesystems(RTS)areusedinawidevarietyofapplications,rangingfromvery
simple electronicsystemstothemostcomplexavionicsandmedicalsystems.RTSare
time-related, whichmeansthebehaviorofthesesystemsdependsonthetimingrequire-
mentsdefinedinthedesigntimeandrefinedduringexecutiontime.Componentbased
programming isthetypicalparadigmtodevelopRTSandthisisduetoitmodularnature,
whichhelpstohidethecomplexityofsuchsystemsandminimizesdevelopmentcosts.One
example ofRTSisamedicalsystemthatmonitorsapatientvitalsignsinahighacu-
ityenvironment,thissituationischaracterizedbythepresenceofmanymedicaldevices
where eachdevicehasitownpre-definedtasksandrequiredmeasurements.Thepresence
of morethanonedeviceinoneclinicalsituationmayaffectpatientsafetybecauseofthe
lackofcommunicationbetweenthesedevicesandthereforeinteroperabilityisneededto
avoidhazardsandpatientshealthstatusdegradation.
The interconnectionofmedicaldevicesinawidernetworkofcomputationalserversis
emerging asanewrequirementinmodernmedicine,wherethefinalgoalistomonitor
and improvepatientsafety.Theheterogeneityofmedicaldevicesprovidedbydifferent
suppliers isakeychallengeinmedicalsystems,whereinteroperabilityanddatacommuni-
cation acrossdevicesisstillunderstudyandspecification.Theproposedsolutioninthis
thesis aimstocreateastandardinterfacetocovermedicaldevicesheterogeneity,hence,
achieveinteroperabilityinasafewaywithrespecttotimingrequirements.It’sbasedon
the integratedclinicalenvironment(ICE)standardandcomponenttechnologyasapro-
gramming paradigm,thearchitecturefocusesondefininganinteroperablebusbetween
the patient,medicaldevices,softwareapplicationsandtheclinician.Thisworkillustrates
