Ouvrage de référence pour les filières de l'environnement, le livre s'articule autour de trois axes principaux, avec des informations permettant au lecteur une prompte compréhension de la chimie des eaux. Il décrit en détail les équilibres fondamentaux, les eaux naturelles et les pollutions qui interviennent dans des mécanismes réactionnels plus ou moins spontanés et naturels, ou causés par le contexte environnemental. Sont d'abord exposées quasiment toutes les connaissances à retenir par un futur chimiste de l'eau. Puis est abordée une étude détaillée du monde des vivants dans l'eau et de ses interactions avec l'écosystème, illustrées par de nombreux schémas. L'idée caractéristique est d'apporter aux notions indispensables et de base de la chimie des solutions une note particulière voire originale de la chimie contemporaine liée aux nouveaux matériaux. Ces matériaux sont considérés en tant que supports adsorbants avec des caractéristiques originales fournissant des interfaces efficaces dans la dépollution des eaux. L'exposé suppose la maîtrise par le lecteur de certaines connaissances de physiques ou de mathématiques et de leurs formulations courantes, mais il évite les termes scientifiques trop spécifiques.
