Electron field emission properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/polyethylene oxide (PEO) thin and thick films composites with (5%, 15%, 25%, 33%, 40% and 50 % loading of MWCNTs) prepared using solution casting technique were investigated. The J(E) curves were measured and modeled according to Fowler–Nordheim theory. Sample with 33% MWCNTs loading showed the best results with 7.66 V/µm turn on and 9.72 V/µm threshold fields when prepared as thin film as well as 6.51 V/µm turn on and 9.07 V/µm threshold fields when prepared as thick film. The highest enhancement factor of 1509 and 1853 were observed in 15% thin and 33% thick films respectively. Excellent current stability, for the duration of about 34 min was observed for almost all samples. On the other hand, acetone/water liquid mixtures were evaporated and applied with several flow rates to the thick films in order to test their ability of sensing. Reproducible patterns of resistance variation with time were obtained. Consequently, the response and sensitivity of each sensor was evaluated. Raman spectroscopy and SEM microscopy showed a good matrix/filler interaction and thermogravimetric analysis indicated that thermal degradation of the composites occurred in two stages. The FTIR analysis pointed out that no chemical reaction was held during sensing operation.
